September Meeting Highlights

The September business included 2 interesting briefings. The first by Rich Poremba of the Boys & Girls Club of Petaluma. The B&G Club is coordinating a community art exposition which will team artists with business sponsors to paint up to 50 1950 style car replicas. This is similar to the hearts that are on display in San Francisco or that cows that were all over the county last year. There will be an $800 stipend provided to each artist selected to design the cars. For an application to be selected as one of the artists, please contact Rich at 707-769-5322 x16 or rporemba@petalumabgc.org

The second brief was by Alison Marks, President of the Petaluma Arts Council (PAC). Several members of the PAC have been working tirelessly to help the City establish a public art ordinance. At some point in the next few months, the ordinance will be discussed by the City Council. She will keep us posted on the date they expect that to happen and encourage us to attend the meeting in support of the ordinance.

Our program was extremely fun and entertaining. Local pastel artist Katherine Plank has been a painter for 25 years. She began using soft pastels 20 years ago and has used them almost exclusively for the past 10 years. Katherine talked about the types of pastels that are out there as well as the uses for the different types. She starts, with a photograph, then she sketch’s out the outline of the image, blocking out the composition. She lays large areas of color, using her fingers to blend. She uses harder pastels for the detail work. She prefers to use her fingers, because she wants to be in touch with her pieces. She concluded her session by taking a picture of a Sonoma County water/hills scene, sketching it and then painted a beautiful painting over about 25 minutes time. Katherine gives lessons from the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Members enjoyed her program.
