Annual Planning Meeting a BIG Success!!

By Linda Postenrieder

Thank you the 29 members of PAA who braved the cold (okay, not so cold compared to the East Coast ;-) Saturday morning to help set the 2004 course for the PAA.  The meeting included a full agenda. The meeting was kicked off by Margo McDowell and Karen West.  Margo provided the welcome and Karen conducted the installation of the new Board (see above).  We thank Karen, Margo and Maggie Barnes for their leadership over the last 2 years.

The bulk of the meeting was spent reviewing the organizations goals for 2004 through a large group discussion and then smaller break out groups.  We had a special guest, Karen Peterson from the Petaluma Arts Council (PAC),  join us.  Karen’s input on membership and vision for a Petaluma Arts Center was extremely helpful.  Her suggestions included meeting and researching with Lawyers of the Arts who meet in San Fran. monthly, to help us to establish our non-profit status and other things.  The PAC has done a great job of political action with the Petaluma City Council.

The breakout group discussions and highlights included (facilitator in parentheses) :

q     Public Relations/Membership (Jerrie Jerne’ Morago)

·      Awareness & Exposure: membership applications out to J.C., Library, Luccesshi center, Visitor center, Chamber of commerce, galleries and art supplies stores.

·      Announce our programs in local newspaper events lists (Argus, PD, Bohemian, etc) and include the program info.

·      Find an inexpensive way to produce our membership application.

·      Form a committee that will connect with other organizations and attend public hearings on the arts.

·      Establish a theme show in a local gallery

·      Follow up on the Museum show for April

q      Website/Newsletter (Richard Standard)

·      We need to improve the site in short order.  Meetings will start Tuesday, 1/20 to get the text needed to fill in the gaps.  Several key volunteers will assist with the update.

·      We need volunteers to write the newsletter for a couple months at a time. If interested, please contact Linda or Richard.

q      Art in the Park/Open Studios (Linda Postenrieder)

·      Open Studios is broken and needs to be fixed.  It’s already in the visitors guide as Open Studios.  Consider, after this year, morphing this event into a joint event with the Petaluma Downtown Association (PDA) since their event seemed to hurt OS last year. Consider a consolidation of sites to make it easier for the customer to see more artists.  Also consider a shuttle and better advertising.

·      Art in the Park: Great event that we need to enhance.  Need a central payment system, no ponies, better advertising, more music, a sound system, survey the park for trees and benches and rework the booth layout.  Consider 8’x10’ booths, repeat spaces for the schools, advertise at Farmer’s Market a few weeks prior, figure out how to stop artists from taking the good parking spots around the park.

q      Art on the Move & Special Events (JoAnn Naylor)

·        We have great momentum with this aspect of PAA.  In 2004, add 4 more venues for Art on the Move, create at least one special event or exhibit, find 8 new volunteers to hang art for these exhibits.

PAA 2004 Goals:

1.    Major Events: Continue to provide excellent  major events (Open Studios and Art in the Park)  that will increase participation by the artists, fundraising for the community and exposure for the artists

2.    Membership: Increase membership to 135 individual members and 3 corporate members

3.    Programs: Continue to provide interesting programs at the meetings.

4.    Public Relations: Increase our coordination and collaboration with the PAC, PDA and other art/business entities in Petaluma with the long-term goal of establishing an Art Center in Petaluma.

5.    Fund raising: Increase our fund raising to $15,000 and our scholarships and grants to $2500.

6.    New venues: Add 4 new Art on the Move venues and investigate establishment of a show featuring the Petaluma River.

7.    School Outreach: Enhance our system for communicating and processing scholarship/grant applications to allow us to increase our giving.

Notes of Interest:

·      Congratulations:

This is a new special art event that is being hosted by the Bank of Marin with the artists of PAA proving beautiful works of art for sale at this community event. There will be a poster chosen from art provided by one of the PAA artists that will be printed and for sale in conjunction with the show. Tickets to the public will be $25. Proceeds will go to PAA and Petaluma People's Center.

A work of art from those who participated in the poster selection, will be chosen, printed, and be for sale during the exhibit and reception. The poster selection will be juried by Else and "Gig" Gonella of Petaluma. Both are well known in their art fields. They are native Californians and have chosen Petaluma as their home.

Else is a graduate of Collage of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, The Arts Students League, New York City, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco and has continued her art study at various other colleges. She worked for many years as a fashion illustrator in New York City. When a passion for the Japanese art of serigraphy led her to study the craft, success in that media followed and she has been painting ever since. Her landscapes are done in oil on canvas and wood. She has been honored with many awards and her paintings are included in many public and corporate collections.

"Gig' Gonella is the Advertising Creative Director for Dancer Fitzgerald, San Francisco. He is a graduate of The Academy of Art, San Francisco where he is presently teaches advertising. Gig has won many awards including, Gold Metal for "Best of Show",  "Television and Print and Best 60 Second TV Commercial "(animated) awarded by the Cannes Film Festival in Florence, Italy.

We feel very sure that our poster selection will be in very professional hands and are looking forward to the results. PAA thanks them very heartily for donating their time and expertise to our fund-raiser.
