Wow! The first annual “Spirit of Color” show, the first annual joint PAA/PAC Museum show, Art on the Move in full swing, preparation for Open Studios with over 3 dozen artists participating, collaboration with the PAC April has been an incredible month for PAA. We are so very proud of the tremendous efforts of JoAnn Naylor, Lori Chatterton, Karen West, Linda Sugar, Belu Jones, Mary Gary, Maggie Barnes, Richard Standard and so many other PAA members. Thank you for helping to launch 2004 with such great enthusiasm and success!

As we enter the busy summer season, please keep in mind our other major events on the horizon. Approaching quickly is our Open Studios (OS) event. The OS committee is doing a great job of redefining this event (see the notes below). 2004 marks the 47th Art in the Park event (see call for entries for the poster contest and committee meeting announcement below). Let’s keep up our momentum! GO PAA!!

Art in the Park

Museum Art Show

According to Susan Villa, Museum Association President, the reception for the Museum Art Show on Thursday, April 8, was attended by as many as 200 people! We had a great time viewing the 62 varied works of Petaluma’s loveliest scenes. The show will be up April 7 – 26.

Forty-two artists were represented amongst the 62 works – 87 pieces were entered. One local gallery owner was so excited about our great turnout of Petaluma representations, she busily made notes of artists she wished to call for her own gallery.

The Brainerd Jones designed museum was a charming location for the art. There were so many fine pieces that we used both the downstairs display and one side of the upstairs walls as well as the balcony edges where four large pieces perched overlooking the central space. Music was provided by a flautist, Lisa Eldridge. Richard Standard presented a performance piece, a story he wrote about Shollenberger Park with dulcimer background.

The tabletops were decorated with beautiful floral bouquets arranged by Susan Villa. Also, fun chocolate treats from three Petaluma merchants were served – brownies from Preferred Sonoma Caterers, fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate by Encore Catering, and Rocky Mountain Chocolates provided fudge. There was also lemon water and vodka tasting by Don Payne of Sweetwater Distillers. Sweetwater is a Petaluma based producer of distilled vodka, the only one in the United States

I want to thank the committee made up of members of both the Petaluma Arts Association and the Petaluma Arts Council who all worked together to present this community show. Committee members were: Gail Wilson, Co-chairman, Karen Spratt, Barbara Harden, Maria Bales, Teresa Froschl, Margo McDowell, and Marilee Ford. I also want to thank the Petaluma Museum staff, especially Susan Villa, Kathy Fries, Danielle Bruns, Marshall West and Mildred Benson.

The artwork should be picked up on Monday, April 26, 2 to 4 p.m. GO TO THE BACK DOOR.

Karen West, Co-chairman
